Brownfield a Disciple of Coach John Wooden
Posted on June 12, 2010
Moore Hope Children’s Foundation honors the memory of Coach Jim Brownfield. Brownfield a disciple of former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, absolutely believed in Wooden's pyramid of success. Brownfield, who called Wooden his hero, even incorporated Wooden's pyramid into his own "Ten Commandments of Coaching." Coach Brownfield made it his mission to promote and develop the power of amateur football in developing the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, competitive zeal and the drive for academic excellence in America's youths.
He truly cared about his athletes and about their education. He took great pride in having scholar-athletes on his team, those who had B averages or better. Study hall was a mandatory part of his Muir football practices for many years. "Bring your homework, get it done, then we can go practice".
DeDe Moore was a young athlete that benefited from the guidance, teaching and care of Coach Brownfield to whom which the Moore Hope Foundation was named after. De e was a disciple of Coach Brownfield in the early 80's. Irvin "DeDe" Moore" a friend, mentor, teammate, and dedicated community leader, lost his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” in 2005. In 2005 the Moore Hope Children’s Foundation hosted the inaugural “Friends Helping Friends” golf tournament to raise money for DeDe’s family and awareness for ALS. Coach Brownfield was the key note speaker.
This year’s 4th annual Moore Hope Children’s Foundation golf tournament will be held at Industry Hills Golf Club on Monday June 28th, at 11:00am. The Foundation will offer a scholarship in honor of Coach Jim Brownfield. The scholarship will be awarded to a student athlete who demonstrates high academic performance. It will be awarded at the Hall of Fame All Star game that was created by Coach Jim Brownfield.
